[Opt-Net] Senior Research Assistant/Research Fellow, University of Southampton

Joerg Fliege J.Fliege at soton.ac.uk
Fri Jul 26 14:35:16 MEST 2013

Joining the School of Mathematics at Southampton and CORMSIS, the
Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information
Systems, a leading international centre for Operations Research and
Optimisation, you will work as part of a research project funded by
the EU Clean Sky Initiative.

Through aircraft trajectory optimization, it is possible to reduce
emission and noise of air traffic, thus ensuring that air traffic
growth is environmentally sustainable. The multiobjective nature of
the issue leads to challenging optimisation problems, and the aim is
to build a powerful software platform for solving a wide range of such
problems by combining existing high-performance optimisation solvers
with recent advances in multiobjective optimisation.

The project will involve the Centre for Operational Research,
Management Science and Information Systems, Southampton. The work will
be carried out in collaboration with the University of Bremen,
Germany, the University of Munich, Germany, and the University of the
Federal Armed Forces, Munich, Germany.

You will be responsible for conducting research and implementation on
computational methods for multiobjective optimisation problems as they
occur in trajectory optimisation of airplanes. You will also
collaborate with other participants in the project, for instance when
comparing numerical simulations with other data.

With a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in mathematics,
scientific computing or a related area, you will need to have good
understanding and knowledge of numerical optimisation methods.
Software development experience in a language amendable for
high-performance computing (C, C++, Fortran, etc.) is essential.
Experience in multiobjective optimisation is desirable.

The position is tenable from 1 December or as soon as possible thereafter.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Joerg Fliege via
telephone; 023 8059 8453 or email j.fliege at southampton.ac.uk.
