Open Positions:

The Research Training Group (RTG) on Lorentz Force Velocimetry and Lorentz Force Eddy Current Testing at Technische Universität Ilmenau is offering the following open positions (www.tu-ilmenau.de/lorentz-force/open-positions<http://www.tu-ilmenau.de/lorentz-force/open-positions>):

12 full-time research positions for doctoral students

Especially for the positions in project B-5 a strong background in continuous mathematical optimization is required.

The positions start 01 January 2016. The research positions have a duration of three years and are paid according to the TV-L E13 scale of the German public sector (35.000 – 40.000 € per year before tax depending on work experience).

The measurement of flow velocities in hot and aggressive liquids like metal melts and molten glass is one of the grand challenges of industrial fluid mechanics. A physically closely related challenge is the detection of deeply lying flaws and inhomogeneities in electrically conducting solid materials. Since 2004, scientists and engineers at Technische Universität Ilmenau have been developing two novel technologies termed Lorentz force velocimetry and Lorentz force eddy current testing to meet these challenges. Both technologies are based on measuring the Lorentz forces that are induced by the interaction of electrically conducting moving substances and magnetic fields.

The RTG is sponsored by the German Science Foundation DFG and took up work January 2010. Within the RTG, the basic physics of these technologies shall be explored by performing high-precision model experiments, high-resolution numerical simulations, and intense analytical modeling. The RTG provides a creative and inspiring environment, excellent laboratory facilities, state-of-the-art scientific computing facilities, and the possibility of collaborating with industry and with foreign institutions. The RTG strongly supports students wishing complete their PhD studies within a three-year period. The abstracts of the 12 planned projects (third PhD-generation) and further details can be found at http://www.tu-ilmenau.de/lorentz-force/rtg-research/.

Successful candidates for the research positions should have

• an excellent Diploma or Master degree, preferably in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or mathematics,

• an excellent knowledge of the English language,

• a high motivation for interdisciplinary work in an international scientific team, and the commitment to complete the doctoral program within three years.

Depending on the preferred project, experience in either fluid dynamics, measurement technologies, mathematical optimization, or high performance computing is helpful, but not required.

Technische Universität Ilmenau aims to establish gender equality and highly encourages women to apply. Handicapped applicants with identical qualification will be considered with priority. Special services are available concerning all social matters.

We invite all applicants to e-mail the complete set of documents (see www.tu-ilmenau.de/lorentz-force/open-positions „Required Documents“) in PDF format by 19 June 2015 to lorentz-force at tu-ilmenau.de mentioning desired position, research area (project number), and reference number 11/2015.

Scientific questions can be addressed to the RTG Speaker, Prof. Jörg Schumacher (joerg.schumacher at tu-ilmenau.de) or the RTG Scientific Coordinator, Prof. Christian Karcher (christian.karcher at tu-ilmenau.de<mailto:christian.karcher at tu-ilmenau.de>).

Best regards, Gabriele Eichfelder (TU Ilmenau, Institute for Mathematics, email: gabriele.eichfelder at tu-ilmenau.de
