Two PhD positions in Mathematical optimization within complex production

The Division of Applied mathematics and Statistics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg invites applications for two PhD positions in optimization starting March 1, 2018, or as agreed.
See https://www.chalmers.se/en/about-chalmers/Working-at-Chalmers/Vacancies/Pages/default.aspx?rmpage=job&rmjob=5713 for the announcement and the application procedure.

We are looking for two doctoral students in mathematical optimization. Both students will study decision support problems for resource allocation and utilization within complex production systems.

One PhD project will be performed in cooperation with GKN Aerospace Sweden AB, and will address tactical resource allocation planning, i.e., the process to allocate processing operations to production resources while performing resource and capacity planning. Due to an increasing demand for flexibility in the production there is a need for improved methodology and algorithmic support in the planning process. More information about the project is available at http://www.math.chalmers.se/~anstr/PhD-position-GKN-projektbeskrivning-171214.pdf

One PhD project will be performed in cooperation with Saab AB, and will address the development of efficient methods for the management of maintenance and support of tomorrow’s aircraft system. The student will develop and adapt mathematical optimization models and methods to improve the system-of-systems performance, in daily operations as well as over the whole aircraft life cycle. The Department of Mathematical Sciences (see http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/Pages/default.aspx) at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 170 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas.

As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge and write your thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The positions are full-time temporary employments limited to a maximum of five years.

Applicants must have a strong background in applied mathematics. They must have obtained a master's degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete that degree by the time the employment starts.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application deadline: 31 January, 2018
