Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to the following post-doctoral position in optimisation theory / variational analysis / inverse problems in Liverpool.

----

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Applied Mathematics Grade 7
Mathematical Sciences
005504
£32,958 - £38,183 pa
08-Mar-2017
We are seeking an individual to work on the EPSRC-funded project “PARTIAL Analysis of Relations in Task of Inversion for Algorithmic Leverage” awarded to Dr Tuomo Valkonen. The post is based in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Liverpool. It is expected to be filled by a mathematically highly capable candidate with background in optimisation theory or variational analysis.

POST: Analysis and optimisation methods for non-linear and PDE-constrained inverse problems.

The objective of the project is to develop efficient optimisation algorithms for the solution of large-scale inverse problems. This will be based on a study to gain a better understanding into the stability of the solutions to these problems under perturbations of the model and the data. We are particularly interested in inverse problems with non-linear forward operators or constrained by partial differential equations. Besides inverse problems, in the long run our work will be applicable to a diverse range of disciplines from financial planning to machine learning. You must display clear evidence of outstanding promise and originality in research and have a promising publication record. You should be able to do highly technical mathematical work. This is desirably combined with a background in optimisation theory or variational analysis. Practical experience in the solution of inverse problems will be highly valued. You should have a PhD in a relevant subject (pure or applied mathematics, or computer science), and have good experience in programming in language such as Matlab or Python (NumPy). You will be expected to work effectively as a member of the research team, have the ability to develop and apply new concepts, and have a creative approach to problem-solving. You will also be expected to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication. The post is available from 1 August 2017 for 14 months.
