[Opt-Net] PhD Position, Large-scale Computational Optimization for HiGHS, University of Edinburgh

The HiGHS team is inviting applications for a fully funded 4-year PhD position in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. Strong applicants who can start by 1 March 2023, particularly if they are UK for fees, will be offered an annual stipend of up to £32k.

The project will develop a new interior point solver for HiGHS and, although of general applicability, the solver will be developed in the context of solving energy system planning problems. The work will be carried out in collaboration with Électricité de France (EDF), the open-source Python for Power System Analysis (PyPSA) project, and other sources of industrial and academic energy system planning problems.

By joining the team producing HiGHS, the successful student will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills at the cutting edge of large-scale optimization, and achieve real and lasting impact. Open-source energy system modelling is the only option for many stakeholders, such as non-governmental organizations, early-stage companies, and government ministries in lower income countries. Although HiGHS can solve planning problems that are intractable with any other open-source software, for many problems there is still a significant gap between the performance of HiGHS and that of the best commercial solvers. The need to close this gap has attracted a $420k donation to HiGHS. This position will also be supported by €35k of funding from the Fondation Mathématique Jacques Hadamard.
