HiGHS (https://highs.dev/), in association with the Optimization and Operational Research Group of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Mathematics, is pleased to invite applications for a four-year PhD studentship, funded by Kraken (Octopus Energy Group). Working in the area of mixed-integer programming and/or decomposition methods, applied to models in the energy industry, this will be a great opportunity to contribute to HiGHS. Ideally the student will start in September 2024, but a later date (up to September 2025) is also possible.
The studentship is not suitable for someone aiming for an academic career, but will give an excellent opportunity to develop and showcase skills that are in great demand from the optimization software industry. Applicants must have a strong background in mathematical optimization, and excellent programming skills.
The studentship will cover tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of £25k per annum, and is open to UK and non-UK nationals. Anyone interested in applying is asked to contact Julian Hall (jajhall at ed.ac.uk<mailto:jajhall at ed.ac.uk>).
HiGHS is the world’s best open-source linear optimization software, with an extensive user base in the public and private sectors, thanks in part to its use as the linear programming and mixed-integer programming in SciPy and the MathWorks Optimization Toolbox, and prominence in commercial and open-source modelling systems such as JuMP, AMPL and GAMS.
