A position as a

  Research Associate (Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in, TV-L 13/BAT IIa)

is available at the Institute for Computer Science, University of
Cologne, Germany. This full-time position in the project

         "Combinatorial Optimization in Physics"
         http://cophy.informatik.uni-koeln.de/

is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft within the Emmy
Noether Programme. It offers the opportunity to work toward a PhD.

Combinatorial optimization problems arise in the study of various
relevant theoretical physics applications. The aim of the project is
to develop and implement algorithms for their solution. Whereas some
tasks are easily modeled as flows, paths, cuts etc. in specific
graphs, new models need to be defined for others. Moreover, important
applications apart from physics exist.

Candidates should have a university diploma or Master's degree in
mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline. Strong
background in optimization methods and good software implementation
skills are required. Knowledge about physics is not a prerequisite.

The position is initially open for 20 months, with possible
extension. Preferred starting date is April 1st, 2009.

Questions and applications should be addressed to

Dr. Frauke Liers, Institut fuer Informatik, Pohligstrasse 1, D-50969
Cologne, Germany, liers at informatik.uni-koeln.de

Electronic applications are highly welcome.
