A PhD position is available in the research group "Discrete Optimization and Logistics" of Prof. Stefan Nickel at the Institute of Operations Research (Faculty of Economics and Business Engineering) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, within the research project

"New Models, Algorithms, and Applications for Territory Design"

funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The position is for three years (TV-L E 13) starting October 1, 2010 (exact date is negotiable).

Applicants must have or be about to complete a diploma, master's degree, or equivalent in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline. The applicant should have a profound knowledge and interest in Discrete and Combinatorial Optimization as well as Integer Programming. Also required are good programming skills (preferably C++) as well as knowledge in the design of efficient algorithms. Acquaintance with Geographical Information Systems would be helpful.


The position focuses on research in the following subjects:

- enhancements of classical territory design models to open up a broader range of practical problems

- applications of territory design models in OR and interdisciplinary research areas

- development of an algorithmic library with interfaces to geographical information systems
