Reader/Senior Lecturer in Operational Research/Management Science
University of Southampton - School of Mathematics/School of Management

£45,155 - £55,535 per annum

The LANCS Initiative (see http://www.lancs-initiative.ac.uk) is a £13
million project to expand UK research capacity in the foundations of
Operational Research (OR). LANCS is a collaboration between four of
the leading OR research groups in the UK (Lancaster, Cardiff and
Nottingham are joined with Southampton in the Initiative).

Benefiting from their position within the research-oriented culture of
a Russell Group University, the Schools of Management and Mathematics
are seeking to consolidate strength in Operational Research/Management
Science (OR/MS). Through the LANCS Initiative, three excellent
appointments have already been made at Lecturer level. Applications
are now invited for the post of Reader/Senior Lecturer in OR/MS. All
four of these posts are joint appointments between the two Schools.

You should have a PhD in OR/MS or a related discipline, and an
established high-quality research track record, ideally including
successful research grant applications. You will be expected to have
research expertise (and future research plans) closely aligned to one
of the research themes of the LANCS Initiative, currently Healthcare,
Transportation and Logistics, Optimisation, Heuristic Understanding,
and Systems to Build Systems. We particularly welcome applicants with
research interests in developing new methodology that is applicable to
actual practical problems.

Experience of teaching, assessment of students and dissertation
project supervision is essential. Duties, as determined by the Heads
of the Schools of Mathematics and Management, will include:
conducting research at international level in OR/MS; applying for
externally funded research grants; actively contributing to the
research activities of the LANCS initiative; and teaching
undergraduate and postgraduate students including the supervision of
research students. As part of the role, you will also be expected to
support the effective management and administration within the two
Schools, including helping to support the junior LANCS staff.

The position is available from 1 February 2011 or as soon as possible
thereafter.

Interviews are expected to be held in mid January 2011. As part of
the interview process, candidates will be invited to give a research
presentation.

Informal enquiries can be made at any time to:
